Brief History of Our Winery

390 160

2006
In March 2006 we go online with our website.

2004
We give our whole business a new image. This includes newly designed labels on the bottles and also a new name for the winery - Berger Leginthov.

2002
We bottle our top “Leginthov” red wine cuvée (vintage 2000) for the first time.

2001
We enlarge our winery by buying the neighbouring plot of land.

2000
We newly plant a total area of 5 ha (!) with the following grape varieties: Zweigelt, St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon blanc.

1998
Our “Monachus” red wine cuvée (vintage 1995) is bottled for the first time.

1997
Our son Johannes travels through California, and learns new things about wine-making at the renowned Chateau Montelena Winery in Napa Valley.

1995
Johannes gets practical experience outside our vineyard, at the Austrian Kollwentz Winery in Großhöflein.

1995
We take a lease on a 7.5ha area of vineyards, almost doubling our piece of land to approx. 18ha.

1993
A severe frost during the previous winter reduces the harvest considerably. The quality, on the other hand, is excellent.

1992
First trials with small oak barrels. Our first barrique wine is Zweigelt Barrique 1990.

1991
We tear down the old buildings and stables and erect a new winery building, including a new cellar and vinification area. Now, all the work can be done under one roof - starting from processing the grapes, then bottling the wines, and finally storing the bottles.

1989
We plant the Cabernet Sauvignon variety for the first time, in the Theiltenäcker vineyard, and are one of the first vintners in Burgenland to do so.

1981
We decide to build a new house (plus cellar) to live in. We still process the grapes at Maria Anna’s parents’ place and bottle them in our own cellar. Due to a lack of space we can only store the bottled wines and some of our barrels and tanks. The actual storage cellar is still at our parents’ / parents-in-law’s winery.

2006 - website goes online

2000 - new planted vineyard (Shiraz)
